Vitamins for Depression
on December 11th, 2011 at 7:31 pmVitamins are very important for a body to work properly. High doses of vitamins are one of the alternative treatments for depression although the amount of legitimate research on the subject is somewhat limited. This is because the medical community generally prefers to treat depression with antidepressants rather than vitamins for a variety of reasons. Many people think that they are giving their body the elements it needs to function properly through the food that they eat. What they do no know is that they cannot get what they need from most foods alone. Unless you are visiting a nutritionist or you have done significant research on the amount vitamin treatments alone, it is highly recommended that you do not use vitamin treatments exclusively. See our page on niacin for more information about treating depression with Vitamin B.
Kris has heard plenty of arguments indicating that the pharmaceutical companies are trying to cover up vitamins as a treatment for depression. This seems rather far fetched in terms of a pure reason why people ignore vitamins. Rather, the food simply does not taste as good when you are getting food full of the proper vitamins rather than eating foods that are packed full of sugar.
Why Do We Lack Vitamins?
Most food is either processed or is grown many miles away on poor soil conditions,
which means that by the time the food is on the shelf it only has forty percent of the
nutrients it started out with. As a result, many people end up in a doctor’s office with
avitaminosis, which is any disease that is caused by a vitamin deficiency. Little did they
know the cause of their symptoms was a lack in specific nutrients that the body needs to function daily. This is actually a very common issue in countries with packaged food. It is much less of a problem in places with farmers markets.
Kris eats tons of frozen and packaged food so he is almost certain that he has multiple vitamin deficiencies. He takes daily multivitamins, fish oil, plus certain vitamin supplements to try and combat his vitamin deficiencies. Combined with strong prescription medication this has helped get both his body and mind to a much better place.
Are Vitamins Enough?
Many people want to use vitamins as an exclusive treatment for depression. In some cases, milder forms of depression may actually be caused by a vitamin deficiency so it is a good idea to start exercising and getting the proper amount of vitamins in your diet. However, vitamins alone are not enough. When it comes to enough in terms of physical health, you should also be exercising at least one hour five times a week. Vitamins are not enough to keep your body in a healthy state.
Kris is constantly being asked for alternative treatments to depression that do not involve taking prescription medication. Unfortunately, prescription medication is the ONLY true proven way to treat depression when fighting a chemical imbalance in your brain. However, keeping your body healthy is certainly a beneficial goal that will increase your endorphin levels. This certainly helps to some degree. However, it is important to understand that regardless of the reason that you want to avoid taking prescription medication, it is the only way that you are going to feel normal if you have major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder.
Should Vitamins Be A Part of Depression Treatment?
Absolutely. Any psychiatrist who tells you otherwise has not studied enough on the subject. Living a healthy lifestyle should be a part of every treatment plan for depression.
Kris tries to keep his body as healthy as possible because he knows that depression is much more likely to return when he starts eating terrible foods and does not exercise.
