Here’s How You Can Help
- Learn about depression so that you are informed on what depression really is. Let’s help get rid of the sterotypes that people suffering from depression are insane or did something wrong and let’s start explaining that depression is serious illness that stays with people for the rest of their life. It’s time to get to know the enemy.
- Join a support group. Even if you are a friend or family member of someone with depression we would love to have you join us and let us know your experiences. Hopefully we will have some insight on how you can help your loved one as the struggle with depression
- Listen. Whether you are suffering from depression or whether you know someone with depression, make sure that you are constantly listening to what others are telling you. It is so easy to miss queues that tell you that a person is crying out for help. Pay attention to other people’s feelings and actions because you may notice something that is not right.
- Keep the suicide hotline phone number on hand. The number is 1-800-273-8255
- Encourage family and friends to get a mental health check up. You get physical check ups at the doctor, so why shouldn’t you get your mind checked out as well?
- Call 911 if you or someone else is thinking of suicide
- Link to us and other depression websites on your social networks or blogs when you hear that someone is struggling. Sending them a website where they can learn more may be very beneficial for them.
