Depression Treatment
Depression Treatment Does Not Necessarily Have to Take Place in a Clinical Environment
Depression has long track record of successful diagnosis and treatment. Physical examination by a physician is the very first step in depression treatment. There are certain medications or viral infections that result in same kind of symptoms as depression. So the first step would be to rule out any possible physical causes of depression. After the initial examination, interview or even lab test, the physician will decide whether or not you should be referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist.
After a complete evaluation, the professional will decide which form of treatment is most appropriate for you. In mild cases, psychotherapies do very well. In moderate to sever cases, use of antidepressants might be the best choice. Usually, the actual treatment would consist of both medication and psychotherapy.
Another option which is only used for individuals with sever symptoms and in life threatening situations, or those who are unable to take antidepressants is Electro convulsive Therapy (ECT). Even though ECT might not have the best connotation, there has been major improvements in using ECT for depression treatment. It is done under slight anesthesia and muscle relaxant is used before the treatment.
There is one common mistake that most people suffering from depressive disorders do which you should be aware of. They often stop taking the medication as soon as they feel better. At some cases, they think that the medication is not effective anymore and the symptoms are gone, so they can stop taking it. Unfortunately in most cases, the depression will come back if the patient stops taking the medication earlier than what is recommended by her doctor.
Also, a change of lifestyle to a more active one (both physically and mentally) is one of the best ways an individual can help his or her own treatment.
Herbal therapy is another form of depression treatment. Herbal supplements such as most commonly used St. John wort, or ephedra, gingko biloba, and ginseng are used as natural remedies for depression. It is of outmost importance that you consult with a doctor or health care provider before taking any herbal supplement to prevent any potential drug interaction.
