Dear Reader,

Unfortunately due to the sensitive nature of what I am about to reveal, I must remain anonymous for the sake of my own privacy from my current employer.  For those of us who live in a Right to Work State within the United States, you should also investigate the legal repercussions from discrimination against those with any mental health conditions as lawsuits due to mental health discrimination are much harder to pursue in a Right to Work State.  That being said let me introduce myself with the alias Kris Silverton.

I discovered for the first time that I was struggling with depression in roughly 1995.  However, I did not seek treatment until 2006 due to pure stupidity on my part.  With a family history of major depression including my grandmother’s suicide, my brother’s diagnosis of bipolar disorder, a wife who was very concerned of my mental state, a point in my life when I finally had health insurance, and the desire to start a family, I finally decided it was time to seek help.  After working with a psychiatrist, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder with recurrent episodes with my most recent episode being major depression and I was also diagnosed with anxiety disorder (DSM codes: 296.42 Bipolar I Disorder Moderate, 296.44 Bipolar I Disorder Severe With Psychotic Features, 300.02 Generalized Anxiety Disorder).  I have since been able to control my anxiety disorder and manic episodes through treatment including medicine and other self-help methods, but still struggle with major depression.

I will state very clearly that I suffered for 11 years where I clearly knew there was something wrong before seeking any help.  I hope that you or your loved one does not repeat the same mistakes that I made as I certainly could have committed suicide during this period (and almost did several times).  Treatment from a doctor can and will help.  Remember that not all psychiatrists will work well with your situations so you may need to try more than one before you find one that you can open up to.  I still struggle with my psychiatrist on occasion and even have been looking for a new one (as of the writing of this About Me page).

The good news is that there is a happy ending to my story.  After being treated with a variety of high doses of various medicines that didn’t work and finally getting on a treatment plan that is working for me, I am now have a family, I love my job, I attend church on Sundays, I have a house, have multiple graduate college degrees, and now am running a website on a subject that I am passionate about.  Things can get better through treatment so it is worth talking to your doctor.  In my case I do not think that my depression will ever be curable, but hopefully prescription and other treatments will keep my depression to bearable levels.

Please understand that I suffer from major depression, manic episodes, and anxiety disorder and have absolutely no medical training.  In fact, I have never been admitted to a hospital for any reason (even a broken bone) so I have almost no contact with medical professionals.  Although I have read books and done research on these subjects since I am suffering from depression, I cannot be considered an expert in any way, shape, or form.  Therefore, any information on this website cannot be considered medical advice.  Rather, this is information from a fellow sufferer that may have helped me, but may be completely inaccurate from a medical point of view.  I make no claim to the accuracy or reliability of this information.  Everyone’s body and chemical makeup is different so the only person that can accurately diagnose and treat your condition is a certified medical professional.
